Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam has alleged that Gautam Adani has struck a deal with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Infrastructure to acquire power for the Mumbai region and has a plan to deceive Mumbaikars. He made this statement at a press conference which took place on Tuesday. He added that, if this deal works out, nearly 30 lakh people will end up paying inflated monthly power bills.

Nirupam targeted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) adding that whenever the former party has acquired power, Mumbaikars have faced power crisis.

In 2003, during BJP’s regime, Reliance Infrastructure Company bought BSES and the power rates doubled. From 2003 to 2018, power rates have increased by 30 per cent. In 2003, it was ₹300 and in 2018, the rate has gone up to ₹900. He added that why did Adani Company buy Reliance Infrastructure who is already in debt for ₹18,800 Cr?,” Sanjay Nirupam, MRCC President.

Nirupam questioned Adani's company buying Reliance Infrastructure, which is already in debt with a market price of ₹5,775, for ₹18,800 Cr.

He further said that Adani Transmission is debt ridden with ₹47,000 Cr and should be paying off the debt. Nirupam added that one should find out about the banks which got ready to pay the loan to debt-ridden Adani's company.

He also alleged that both Adani and Ambani are close to India Prime Minister Narendra Modi and so they might be getting help from the PMO's office.

Nirupam said that he will be writing to Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to investigate the Adani-Ambani deal.
