Plans have come forward to build a new Vidhan Bhavan on the lines of the new Parliament building, close to the circular Vidhan Bhawan building that was built around 42 years ago. On the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the premises of Delhi's government offices are being redeveloped. A new Parliament building has been constructed and it was inaugurated by Modi last month. In line with the BJP leaders' strategy of replicating Delhi in Mumbai, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar is planning to transform the Vidhan Bhavan premises on the lines of the Parliament.

Like Lok Sabha MPs, the number of MLAs in state assemblies may increase after 2026. There is not enough space in the assembly hall to accommodate more MLAs. This is why the demand for building a new legislative building is coming forward. According to this, there is a plan to construct a new building of Vidhan Bhavan. A proposal in this regard will be sent to the concerned department soon.

It is proposed that the parking space in front of the existing Vidhan Bhawan can be used for constructing the new building. The present round shaped Vidhan Bhawan building was built by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Chief Minister A. R. Antule. It was inaugurated in 1981 under the chairmanship of Antule. The building was recently renovated and painted. Also the ground floor and first floor have been completely renovated.

Ministry redevelopment stopped

When Chhagan Bhujbal was the Minister for Construction, he had proposed a plan to redevelop the premises of the Ministry and the minister's bungalows in front of it. Accordingly, there was a plan to demolish the minister's bungalows in front of the ministry and build residences for ministers and government offices in their place. It was also planned to connect the ministry and the new administrative building in front of it through a bridge. When the Ministry building caught fire, the plan to demolish the old building and build a new one also fell through. A proposal to purchase the Air India building for government offices for INR 1600 crores has been submitted to the central government on behalf of the state government. Officials say that since Air India's building is old, there will not be much benefit in buying it.
