Mumbai Police is searching for those who on Saturday raised slogans in support of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and activist Sharjeel Imam during the LGBTQ pride parade in the city.

QAM organised the 'Mumbai Pride Solidarity Gathering 2020' on February 1 at Azad Maidan. In the parade, the supporters of activist Sharjeel Imam raised slogans in his support: "Sharjeel tere sapno ko mazil tak pahuchayengey (Sharjeel, we will actualise your dreams)".

The LGBTQ organisation also issued a statement condemning the pro-Sharjeel Imam slogans raised in the parade and informed the police that the group which raised such slogans were not known to them.

Mumbai Police has not registered a case against those who raised such slogans in support of Sharjeel Imam. The QAM issued a statement distancing themselves from the controversy after a video went viral where the chants supporting Sharjeel Imam can be heard.

"Neither QAM nor the individuals who have signed the permissions were communicated with or kept informed of the intent and content of this sloganeering," said QAM in a statement.

Earlier, Mumbai Police had denied permission to QAM for carrying out an LGBTQ pride parade in the wake of protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

However, the permission was later granted on certain conditions. The LGBTQ organisation had informed about the same on social media.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya has filed a complaint at Azad Maidan police station against the chanting of slogans in support of Sharjeel Imam. Somaiya has threatened to go on a 'dharna' if the police fail to take action within three days.

"What is this going on Mumbai? And why is the Maharashtra government tolerating this?" Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader, Devendra Fadnavis asked on Twitter.

Sharjeel Imam gave a controversial speech at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) before the crowd protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), advocating for a 'chakka jam' and separating North Eastern states from rest of India.
