Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah saying that his meeting was not political.

He informed that he informed the Prime Minister about the COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra and sought financial assistance for the sugar industry in the state during his meeting with Shah.

Fadnavis’ visit to New Delhi comes amid the political stir in Rajasthan and has raised speculations of ‘Operation Lotus’ in Maharashtra. While speaking to reporters, Fadnavis, however, denied the claims and said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will fall due to “internal contradictions”.

After his meeting with Shah, he further said that the BJP was not trying to destabilise the Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra but was focused on the fight against the coronavirus.

“There is no operation lotus in Maharashtra. We have said this before that the MVA government has internal contradictions and when it falls it will be because of the same,” Fadnavis asserted.

Fadnavis said that the COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra was out of control and the policies adopted by the state government are not adequate.

The former Maharashtra Chief Minister also rejected the speculations of him getting a role in the national politics and said that the decision of finalising candidates for parliamentary board rests with PM Modi, Shah and other senior party leaders.

Fadnavis further informed that he has urged the centre to raise the Minimum Support Price (MSP), restructure loans and extend a soft loan to the sugar sector. He said that Shah has assured that he will consider Fadnavis’ demands.

Accompanied by BJP leaders including Dhananjay Mhadik, Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil, Prithviraj Deshmukh and others, Fadnavis also met Narendra Singh Tomar who is the Union Minister for Agriculture and Ram Vilas Paswan - the Union Minister for Civil Supplies - to discuss the issues in the agriculture sector.
