Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that some people think that building a temple will help tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

While speaking to reporters in Solapur, Pawar urged the central and state governments to pay more attention to the coronavirus and economic crisis which has gripped the country. The NCP chief said that Maharashtra has the same priority.

“The priority of the Maharashtra government is to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. However, some people think that building a temple will lead to the eradication of coronavirus,” Pawar said.

His remarks come after Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust invited the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stone for Ram Mandir. The spokesperson of the trust said that they have suggested two auspicious dates - August 3 or 5 - for the same.

Earlier on February 5, PM Modi had announced the formation of the Shri Ram Janambhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust. However, the plans to construct the Ram temple got delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

While commenting on the development, Pawar said that some people think that coronavirus will go away after temple construction while sarcastically adding that “that’s why they must have organised the programme”.

The NCP chief further informed that he is getting to know about the same from the reporters. Pawar’s party is one of the key constituents of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra.

Sena chief and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has been supportive of the Ram temple construction. Thackeray visited Ayodhya after completing 100 days of being in power.

Earlier, Pawar had backed the central government over the Indo-China border tension at Galwan Valley in Ladakh. In a violent clash with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), nearly 20 soldiers were martyred.
