Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is supporting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s decision to ban plastic and thermocol. NCP Mumbai President Sachin Ahir met Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Tuesday, demanding that NCP supports the ban but is against the way it is being implemented. He advised that in order to avoid plastic in Mumbai, the corporation should build an inspection team at Mulund, Dahisar, and Vashi nakas

The plastic ban has created an atmosphere of confusion amongst the shopkeepers, vendors and citizens and there is no clarity among the officials who take action against the plastic or thermocol items. They do not know about the type of plastic they should take action against. He also demanded that public awareness should be made about this.

He criticised the BMC for allowing the MNCs to use the non-recyclable plastic and these companies have been exempted from the ban. He mentioned it was clear that the companies had pressurised the civic body about their exemption.

He said that instead of fining people about owning plastic items, it is better for BMC to just seize the bags. He added that BMC should make arrangements for people to submit plastic bags to the ward office within 15 days and the civic body is obliged to introduce public with alternatives to the plastic bags.

He told the commissioner that without proper knowledge, fining the people is a wrong thing to do. He declared that if BMC doesn’t stop taking penal action against the people then NCP will protest against the municipal corporation.
