Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday took oath as the member of Rajya Sabha in Delhi along with 44 other newly elected members from various parties.

The oath to 45 of the 61 newly elected members in Rajya Sabha was administered by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. The MPs who were not present will be given a later date to take the oath. For the first time, the oath ceremony was held inside Rajya Sabha hall (chambers) during inter-session.

This was Pawar’s 16th oath ceremony as an elected representative in 54 years of his career as a politician. NCP leader Supriya Sule informed that Pawar has been a six-time MLA in the legislative assembly and was elected to the legislative council once.

Moreover, the former Union Minister has been elected as the member of Lok Sabha seven times and has twice taken oath as the member of Rajya Sabha. Along with Pawar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Udyanraje Bhosale also took oath representing Maharashtra.

Bhosale, who is the descendent of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, had joined the BJP after resigning from NCP last year. He has now been elected as the member of Rajya Sabha.

Of the 45 members who took the oath, 36 were elected to Rajya Sabha for the first time while 12 of them were re-elected in March this year. Jyotiaditya Scindia, who recently joined BJP after quitting Congress, and Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader, have been elected to the upper house for the first time.

Moreover, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and Congress’ Rajeev Satav also swore-in as the members of Rajya Sabha. Pawar and Satav have been made the members of the defence committee which also includes Rahul Gandhi.
