Following the Supreme Court (SC) verdict, the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota will apply to a large number of upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra, this reportedly also includes the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

Based on reports, however, the State Election Commission (SEC) will have to read the order to ascertain if the same will apply to the 92 municipal councils where the polls were stayed last week. It has been reported that the quota will apply to 23 corporation elections, 25 Zilla Parishad polls, 384 panchayat samitis elections and a range of council polls.

However, the quota will not apply to elections for 271 gram panchayats due on August 4 which have already been notified, narratives highlighted. Elections to 92 councils and 4 Nagar panchayats were stayed last week to wait for the SC's verdict.

On the other hand, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis was quoted in reports elaborating on how the state believes that the elections should be conducted after the monsoon considering the flood situation witnessed across the state. He added that they have asked the SEC to consider holding elections after the monsoon and they are waiting to hear the SEC's view on the same.

Fadnavis also spoke about the delimitation exercise for the BMC elections by elaborating on how there have been complaints that the exercise was not conducted in accordance with the rules and thus, they are seeking opinions on the same.
