As the state Assembly elections approach, Mumbai district has ramped up its preparations, with nearly 10,111 polling stations allocated across the city and suburbs. This marks an increase of 218 stations compared to the Lok Sabha elections held in May earlier this year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that each polling station will now serve an average of 1,200 voters, significantly reducing voter congestion from the previous average of 1,500 voters per station.

Indian Express reported that the expansion comes in response to directives from the Election Commission of India and the State Election Commission, aiming to streamline the voting process and improve overall efficiency. By increasing the number of stations, officials hope to make the voting experience smoother and faster for citizens.

Improving Voter Experience

According to BMC officials, the city will now have 2,537 polling stations, while the suburban areas will accommodate 7,574 stations. This is an increase from the 2,509 polling stations in the city and 7,384 in the suburbs during the Lok Sabha elections. The additional stations are expected to significantly reduce wait times for voters and ensure a more efficient process.

The BMC also confirmed that Bhushan Gagrani, the current commissioner and state-appointed administrator, has been named as the district election officer for the upcoming elections. He will oversee the electoral process in Mumbai, ensuring that all measures are in place for a smooth and organized election. The increase in polling stations and reduced voter numbers per booth reflect the administration’s efforts to enhance voting accessibility and efficiency.
