A major political and developmental realignment in Maharashtra was highlighted by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to the state capital. The Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was praised by Shah for forging a new alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), an act which was described as pivotal in redefining the ideological direction of the Shiv Sena.

The remarks were delivered at the inauguration of a new headquarters for the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) and during a state-level Cooperative Industrial Conference. It was stated by the Home Minister that Shinde’s political move had clarified the party’s true representation, which had previously been under dispute since the Shiv Sena’s division in June 2022.

A successful model of governance, referred to as the “double-engine government,” was credited with transforming the economic landscape of the region. Over ₹7 lakh crore in investment was reported to have been attracted under the leadership of Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. Similar achievements were said to have been witnessed during Fadnavis’s earlier term in office. The alliance between the BJP and the Shinde-led faction was described as a catalyst for infrastructure growth and industrial expansion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance was acknowledged as instrumental in these developments. According to Shah, Maharashtra has been positioned as the top economic performer in India, with the highest levels of FDI, international tourist arrivals, and startup activity.

The port at Vadhavan, which is currently under construction, was mentioned as a symbol of the state’s rising significance in the logistics and maritime sectors. In addition, the infrastructure challenges that once plagued Mumbai were said to have been addressed through substantial investments initiated by the Fadnavis government. Criticism was directed toward the previous Congress-led governments, whose efforts in developing Mumbai’s infrastructure were questioned. A lack of initiative in launching transformative projects during their tenure was implied by Shah, who suggested that more could have been accomplished had the political will existed earlier.

Significant financial support from the central government was cited, with ₹7.82 lakh crore having been allocated to Maharashtra from 2014 to 2024, a sharp contrast to the ₹1.91 lakh crore received during the preceding decade. Improvements in irrigation under BJP leadership were linked to a decline in farmer suicides, an issue that was once internationally discussed.
