
The case stemmed from incidents of violence during railway recruitment exams held in Kalyan in October 2008, when candidates from northern states were allegedly attacked by workers associated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. The incident had sparked widespread political controversy at the time.
Delivering the verdict, the court observed that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to establish the accused persons’ involvement in the case. The court also reportedly ruled that certain electronic evidence submitted during the trial did not meet legal admissibility requirements.
The defence argued that Raj Thackeray was not present at the location during the incident and denied allegations that his speeches had provoked violence.
Two of the accused named in the original chargesheet died during the course of the prolonged trial, while the remaining accused were acquitted by the court.
