Reliance Group has served a defamation notice worth ₹1,000 crore to Sanjay Nirupam and are also planning to move a contempt petition against him before the Bombay High Court for making false and baseless allegations.

The Reliance Group who published a press release, stated that Nirupam has made several false, frivolous and baseless allegations and defamatory statements on April 03, 2018 in relation to the proposed sale of Reliance Infrastructure’s integrated Mumbai Power business to Adani Transmission Ltd. and linking the said sale with the purchase of Rafale fighter aircrafts by the Government of India from the Government of France.

For now, the Reliance Group has asked Sanjay Nirupam to immediately withdraw and apologise for the statements made within 72 hours from the receipt of the notice and desist from making any such statements concerning the Reliance Group without first ascertaining the facts.

An order passed by the Bombay High Court, in Suit No.113 of 2014 filed by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, is subsisting against Sanjay Nirupam that restrains him from making such defamatory statements. Despite the above orders, Sanjay Nirupam has chosen to brazenly and in sheer contempt of the High Court making such irresponsible false and defamatory statements.

Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam, in a press conference, had alleged that Gautam Adani has struck a deal with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Infrastructure to acquire power for the Mumbai region with a plan to deceive Mumbaikars. He also added that, if this deal works out, nearly 30 lakh people will end up paying an inflated monthly power bill.
