Mumbai – The new Mayor’s residence is proposed to be made in the Ranibaug as current building housing city’s first citizen is given for the memorial of Shiv Sena president Balasaheb Thackeray. But the standing committee chairman has opposed the proposal of Ranibaug bungalow for Mayor due to the silence zone. He has demanded that municipal commissioner’s bungalow on Pedder Raod should be made available for the new mayor.

The State government had taken a decision to allot the existing mayor’s bungalow for the memorial of Balasaheb Thackeray. The BMC had also passed a proposal in this regard. The new mayor, scheduled to be elected on March 8, will be given the new bungalow as the existing one will be handed over to the concerned authorities for construction of the memorial. It has almost become certain that the bungalow of the municipal commissioner in the Ranibaug premises will be made the new residence for future mayors.

Standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse and other members have inspected this new bungalow. Phanse has found Ranibaug bungalow not perfect as the mayor’s residence due to less space. The Ranibaug area is also declared as silence zone and mayor’s residence draws a large number of guests on regular basis. Beside this, various programmes are regularly held at the mayor’s residence. Due to silence zone, such programmes will not be held in this proposed bungalow for the mayor. Due to this reason, Phanse has suggested that municipal commissioner’s bungalow on Pedder Road should be made the new residence of future mayors.

Shiv Sena group leader in the House, Trushna Vishwasrao, has also supported the idea of new mayoral residence at the municipal commissioner’s bungalow on Pedder Road.
