Weeks after the rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde claimed stake and formed a government in the Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said that the three party alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) - Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress - will fight the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections together.

Pawar, who is on two-day tour of Aurangabad, made this statement claiming that it was his personal opinion that the elections must be held under the banner of the MVA. He further stated that he would have to consult his party colleagues and later, alliance partners Congress and the Shiv Sena for a collective decision in the matter.

This also came days after the former CM demanded mid term polls in the state. Earlier, Pawar had remarked that this newly formed government will not be able to survive for 2.5 years.

Meanwhile, clarifying on the decision to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts as Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv respectively taken in the last cabinet meeting of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government, Pawar shared his party was not consulted before announcing it. The renaming of these districts was the last executive decision taken by former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray before demitting office and he came to know about the decision only after it was taken.

It is pertinent to mention that the MVA government by Thackeray collapsed on June 29, days after his party Shiv Sena faced a rebellion launched by senior leader Eknath Shinde. On June 30, Shinde took oath as the chief minister, while BJP's Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as his deputy. Shinde enjoys the support of 40 rebel Sena.
