Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday urged the centre to cut down on non-plan expenditures and asked the government to delay the construction of new ‘Sansad Bhavan’ or parliament building which was sanctioned by the Modi government earlier.

Pawar also raised complaints to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari passing orders directly to the executives, without consulting the Chief Minister.

During a video conference with the Prime Minister, Sharad Pawar stated that it is being heard that governors in some states are directly issuing orders to the bureaucrats.

“…this creates two power centres in the state. The Governors should consult with the Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries to ensure smooth functioning of the government,” Sharad Pawar said.

Speaking about the impact of the coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak on the Indian economy, the NCP supremo suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi consider a partial relaxation of the lockdown which ends on April 14.

During the video conference, Pawar said that the lockdown may be lifted in some areas of the country after ensuring that there is no compromise on the health and lives of the people amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“The fight against coronavirus pandemic will be long-running. This may have a bearing on the world and Indian economy. There is a need to take appropriate steps. The centre should take steps to uplift the economy,” Sharad Pawar told Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking about the Tablighi Jamaat event which caused a huge ruckus in mainstream media after members of the Jamaat were linked to a spike in the coronavirus or COVID-19 across the country, the veteran leader said that it was not right to blame any society.

Pawar appealed the media and society not to communalise the Nizamuddin event while interacting with the Prime Minister on a video conference. “We need to put it back and focus on how to prevent the spread of the disease. It is not right to blame any society,” the NCP chief stated.

Fifteen days after the nationwide lockdown was placed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with floor leaders of various parties including the opposition. During the video conference, the PM hinted that the lockdown in several parts of the country may be extended.
