Maharashtra’s IT and digital infrastructure are set to receive enhanced protection with the development of a comprehensive cybersecurity policy. Named "Cyber Surakshit Maharashtra," the initiative is being undertaken by the state government to address escalating cyber threats and vulnerabilities in the digital age.
As part of the government’s ambitious 100-day action plan, the Cybersecurity Policy Taskforce 2025 has been established. This taskforce, announced by Minister for Information & Technology Ashish Shelar, is tasked with creating the state’s first-ever cybersecurity policy. The policy is being designed to ensure the safety of citizens, industries, startups, academic institutions, and government entities against the backdrop of rising digital risks.
The increasing integration of technology into everyday life, along with Maharashtra’s significant contribution of over ₹6 lakh crore to India’s $600 billion digital economy, has necessitated this step. The rapid rise in cybercrime and the need to secure nearly 800 online government services are also being addressed through the new policy. In alignment with the National Cybersecurity Policy 2013 and the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2020, Maharashtra’s policy is being structured as a strategic roadmap to combat cyber threats. Its implementation will focus on safeguarding IT infrastructure across government and semi-government organizations while promoting the growth of the cybersecurity industry.
A partnership-driven approach is being adopted, with collaboration encouraged between the government, private sector, academia, and citizens. Through this initiative, innovation, skill development, and research in the field of cybersecurity will be advanced, ensuring that the state remains at the forefront of digital security. The development of the cybersecurity policy has been described as a pivotal milestone in Maharashtra’s digital transformation. By addressing emerging challenges in the digital landscape, the policy is expected to reinforce the state’s reputation as a leader in technological innovation and digital safety.
This initiative signifies the state’s proactive stance in securing its digital assets and fostering a safer environment for citizens and businesses. Through strategic planning and collaborative efforts, Maharashtra’s digital future is being safeguarded for long-term economic growth and resilience.
