Shiv Sena on Thursday defended Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar after the veteran leader was criticised by the opposition for his visit to Konkan region to take stock of the damage caused by Cyclone Nisarga.

Earlier, Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Chandrakant Patil had criticised Pawar for his two-day visit to Konkan region to assess caused by the cyclone. Pawar woke up after the BJP sent aid to areas affected by the cyclone in Konkan region, the BJP leader taunted.

In an editorial published in ‘Saamana’, Shiv Sena said that the NCP supremo is always awake and this is the reason that his political timing is always right. BJP trying to politicise issues when Maharashtra fights the COVID-19 crisis and cyclone Nisarga was “pitiable”, it said.

The Sena questioned the saffron party saying why the centre was not extending assistance to Maharashtra to overcome the damage caused by Cyclone Nisarga.

Pawar was on his two-day visit to Konkan region to take stock of the damage which has been caused in villages in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra. The NCP chief interacted with the local residents as well as the local administration.

To this, Patil said that Pawar has woken up after the BJP leaders sent aid to the affected areas. BJP leader Pravin Darekar was the first to visit the cyclone-hit areas, he added.

However, Pawar sarcastically replied to Patil’s remarks during his visit and said that the BJP has also done surveys and seems like they have planted coconut trees in the area. “I congratulate them,” he added.

While responding to Patil’s remarks, Shiv Sena took it a step further and reminded that BJP leaders woke up at midnight to hold swearing-in at Raj Bhavan in the early morning. However, Pawar checkmated them in two days. “Pawar is always awake,” it said.

Since then the BJP leaders are wide awake and are still waiting to see if they can come to power, the editorial read while stating that the MVA government was always awake but why hasn’t the centre reached out to Maharashtra to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Nisarga.
