In order to tighten the implementation of the plastic ban in Maharashtra, Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam on Tuesday directed to permanently cancel the licence of shops which use plastic for packaging purpose or plastic bags. This decision was taken after a review meeting was held in Mantralaya over the plastic ban.

Earlier, Maharashtra Government allowed plastic packaging for e-commerce for only three months. The shopkeepers can use other environment-friendly products for packaging instead of plastic, Kadam said, adding that people should avoid the use of plastic and thermocol Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali.  During Ganpati, the use of thermocol was 100 per cent banned.

Until now, around 290 tonnes of plastic has been seized in the state. The police have seized several trucks coming from Gujarat carrying plastic in huge amount. The use of plastic is extensive in temples and tourist places. The police and pollution board officials will soon take action there, Kadam clarified.

Zila Parishad, Municipal Corporation, and Municipal Council should deliver cloth bags in huge amount to various shops so that the circulation can begin among the customers,” said Kadam.
