Amid a worsening water shortage in Thane, the civic body’s decision to ban vehicle washing at service centres has triggered a political controversy.
The move has been strongly criticised by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Peasants and Workers Party of India, which alleged that the action unfairly targets small businesses. In representations to the municipal administration, party leaders questioned why restrictions were imposed only on car wash centres while larger sources of water wastage continue unchecked.
They highlighted issues such as water leakage, theft, and the use of potable water for construction activities, arguing that these contribute far more significantly to water loss. The parties urged authorities to prioritise systemic fixes and regulate major consumers before penalising smaller operators.
Opposition leaders also said the ban adversely affects workers dependent on vehicle washing services for their livelihood, calling the decision unjust and anti-worker. They have demanded that the restriction be withdrawn and that uniform action be taken against all forms of water misuse across the city.
The Thane municipal corporation had enforced the ban as part of its efforts to manage declining water levels and address the growing shortage in the city.
