Now Voter ID cards to be linked to Aadhaar card: Chief Election Officer Maharashtra
SHARES

On Monday, July 25, Shrikant Deshpande, Chief Election Officer (CEO), Maharashtra while interacting with the media declared that now voter ID cards will be linked with the Aadhar card. This is reportedly being done to establish the identity of electors and the authentication of entries in the electoral roll.

He added that it will also be used to identify the registration of the name of the same person in more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency.

Deshpande elaborated on how the Election Commission of India will commence a campaign to link the Voter ID Cards with Aadhar cards starting August 1, across Maharashtra.

According to reports, this law was challenged in the Supreme Court (SC) with a Congress leader demanding that it be scrapped. The project to link Aadhar with the electoral data was commenced by the Election Commission as part of its electoral reforms procedure.

Based on accounts, the purpose was to curtail multiple entries in electoral rolls as well as make them free of any errors. In accordance with the Election Laws (Amendment Bill), electoral registration officers can seek the Aadhar numbers of those who wish to register as voters to "establish their identity".

While on the one hand, the government claims it will remove fake voters, the opposition believes that it may cause additional non-citizens to vote in India.
