Winter session in Maharashtra may get delayed

As the state and the city witnesses a surge in the coronavirus infections, the government is considering to conduct the session in January. However, the duration of the session is yet to be decided.

In the wake of second wave of COVID-19, the upcoming winter session of Maharashtra legislative, which was scheduled for December 7 in Mumbai is likely to be postponed or held for two days.

As the state and the city continues to witness a surge in the coronavirus infections, the government is considering to conduct the session in January. However, the duration of the session is yet to be decided.

According to the reports, the new dates and duration of the session would be announced after a meeting which is slated to be held at the end of this month.

The ruling government Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) – Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress -- legislators have communicated to them that they did not want to take any risk at a time when the Health Department has hinted at a spike in cases. The Business Advisory Committees of the assembly and council are expected to meet early this week and take a final decision.

On November 23, Mumbai reported 800 cases taking its total case tally to 2,76,514 of which 12,707 are active cases. With 14 fatalities, the city’s death toll rose to 10,689.

For the first time in the last 60 years, the Maharashtra legislature decided to hold its winter session in Mumbai instead of Nagpur due to the pandemic.

This year, due to coronavirus crisis, the monsoon session was held for only two days in September.
