July 1 is observed as Doctor’s day across the country. Doctor’s day was first observed in the year 1991. July 1 is also the death and birth anniversary of the famous physician of India Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy and this day is observed to appreciate the efforts that the doctor’s make for the well-being of the people. Dr Roy was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.

This year Doctor’s day is of more significance given that we are trying to deal with a pandemic. Doctors have been working round the clock to fight COVID-19. A few doctors have also lost their life battling with the coronavirus.

Doctors who are on COVID duty have to also live away from their families while they are treating infected patients, so as to ensure that they don’t pass on the virus to their near and dear ones..

The health minister of Maharashtra Rajesh Tope tweeted on the occasion of Doctors day saying that he is “forever grateful to the frontline workers who risk their lives to save the lives of their patients.”

Apart from Rajesh Tope, other prominent leaders too took to their Twitter to share their heartfelt greetings for our Corona Warriors. This included Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Modi.

“India salutes our doctors- exceptional care givers who are at the forefront of a spirited fight against COVID-19. #doctorsday2020” Prime Minister tweeted along with a short video.

“On Doctor’s Day, I salute our brave Doctors who have been leading the battle against COVID-19 at the forefront. Their uttermost commitment to keep the nation safe and healthy in these challenging times is truly exceptional. Nation salutes their devotion and sacrifice.” Tweeted our Home minister Amit shah.
