The day was founded in 2004 and was officially adopted in 2013 into the New York State Legislation. It aims to focus on how dogs need to be rescued from unsustainable living conditions. International Dog Day also celebrates all indigenous and pedigree breeds of dogs. This is a day to make your friends aware of how important they are to your life and to help them.

1. Save our Strays, Khar

Save Our Strays in Khar West is one of the best animal welfare organisations in Mumbai. As the name suggests, the organization is working very effectively to save and take care of the stray animals in the city.

This shelter provides various services, which include pet adoption, sterilization of animals, necessary vaccinations, and perhaps most importantly, adequate first aid and health care for any stray animal in need. 


It has also been running a food distribution program since July 2009. In which about 60 stray animals are fed in a week.

2) Yoda, Pali Hill

Located on Pali Hill, Yoda (Youth Organization in Defense of Animals) is a rehabilitation center for animals. They are doing some good work in terms of protection and care of stray animals in Mumbai.

YODA is on a mission to destroy all puppy mills in India. For those who don't know the term, dog mills are places where females have to breed many times over. Such mills emerge as large-scale commercial breeding centers. 

In addition, Yoda provides unlimited animal welfare services, including medical assistance, animal rescue, and pet adoption (including conducting background research on potential adopters).

3) Animals Matter To Me, Malad

Since 2010, they have been running various activities to take care of stray animals in Mumbai. In addition to helping you adopt a cat or dog, they provide free sterilization services, medical services (they treat animals from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm).

They also have an ambulance, which they use to transport critically injured animals. Till date, they have helped save more than 500 animals. Besides, nearly 400 of them have been adopted.

4) World for All, Andheri

The Welfare of Stray Dogs was first established in 1985. The organization is dedicated to the health and safety of stray dogs in Mumbai and is considered as one of the best dog shelters in Mumbai.


They offer a wide range of services, including sterilization, first aid and health care, and adoption schemes. In addition to educating and raising awareness about the problems plaguing stray dogs in India, they are on a mission to eradicate rabies.
