Mumbai's Mahalaxmi is one of the premium localities in the city, and it is visited by several Mumbaikars and tourists throughout the year. People visit the Mahalakshmi temple and the  Racecourse which hosts several activities for racing enthusiasts. Many celebrities also live in this area making it even more popular.

Mahalakshmi Racecourse is an oval shaped horse racing track with a 7,900 ft chute. The popular spot in Mumbai is spread over 225 acres and was developed in 1883 on marshy land then called Mahalakshmi Flats. History states that the design was based on Melborne's Caulfield Racecourse facing the sea.

It is also said that Sir Cusrow N Wadia donated this land and the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) has now taken on a lease from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also known as the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). Reports state that the land was leased for 99 years, and this end in 2013. The administration now aims to lease it further for another 30 years. Currently it is leased for INR 56 lakhs per year, however, this will soon change to INR 42 crore per year.

Mahalakshmi's Racecourse is the only such development with a helipad which can be used by the civilians, and its Grandstand has been designated as a heritage structure.
