Over 6,000 individuals across the city have registered to participate in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) promotional run, which is set to take place, before the half marathon, on February 26.

The BMC's primary objective behind the marathon and the Fit mumbai campaign is to promote fitness and health awareness among Mumbai residents.

The Healthy Mumbai BMC Half Marathon, scheduled to take place on December 17, 2023, will be organized by the civic body, with a goal to encourage citizens to take their fitness seriously.

With over 18% of Mumbai residents between the ages of 18 and 69 having excessive blood sugar levels and 14% of deaths reported in 2021 being related to diabetes, there is a pressing need to prioritise fitness and health.

The BMC's recent STEPwise approach to surveillance (STEPS survey) by the World Health Organization found that 34% of city residents have high blood pressure, and 18% of them have diabetes. These numbers are staggering and reinforce the need for initiatives like the Fit Mumbai campaign and the promotional run before the half marathon.

The promotional run will cover a distance of 10, 5, and 3 kilometers, with the starting point being the BMC's Fort headquarters at 6.15 am. The route for the run will include prominent areas of Mumbai like Hutatma Chowk, Veer Nariman Road, Netaji Subhash Chandra Marg, and MG Road.

Registration for the promotional run is now closed, and over 6,000 people have already signed up for it. Furthermore, an official from the BMC estimated that around 3,000 city employees and officers will also participate in the marathon.
