On Tuesday, January 4, revered social worker Sindhutai Sapkal who was also bestowed with a Padma Shri passed away in a hospital in Pune owing to a cardiac arrest. The 74-year-old breathed her last at Galaxy Care Hospital.

According to reports, she was admitted to the hospital for over a month and succumbed due to a heart attack at the hospital on Tuesday at 8.10 pm. She was popularly known as "Mai" and ran an orphanage in Pune. Herein she adopted over 1,000 orphan children. 

In 2021, she was conferred with the Padma Shri for her contribution to society. Moreover, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray instructed that senior social worker Padma Shri Sindhutai Sapkal be buried in a state funeral on Wednesday, January 5.

Following her demise, dignitaries took to Twitter to offer their condolences. 

Thackeray tweeted, "The news of Sindhutai's demise is shocking. She was the mother goddess who took care of thousands of orphans with her mother's love. Due to his sudden departure, we have lost an inspiring personality in social service.  A heartfelt tribute to senior social activist Padma Shri Sindhutai."

Aaditya Thackeray, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister said, "It is very sad that Maharashtra has lost a mother who saved the lives of many with love. May peace be upon the soul of Sindhutai."

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind remarked, "The life of Dr Sindhutai Sapkal was an inspiring saga of courage, dedication and service. She loved & served orphaned, tribals and marginalised people. Conferred with Padma Shri in 2021, she scripted her own story with incredible grit. Condolences to her family and followers."

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi mentioned, "Dr. Sindhutai Sapkal will be remembered for her noble service to society. Due to her efforts, many children could lead a better quality of life. She also did a lot of work among marginalised communities. Pained by her demise. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti."
