In recent developments, Mumbai's only civilian horse-riding club, the Amateur Riders Club (ARC), will be hosting the Mumbai Equestrian League (MEL) and the Regional Equestrian League (REL) at the Mahalaxmi racecourse in Mumbai between April 2 and May 2, 2021.

Meanwhile, the MEL and REL happen to be crucial leagues for athletes to qualify for national and international showjumping and dressage competitions. Moreover, the league is open to athletes from the entire country and draws participation from towns across Maharashtra.

According to sources, the competitions will be held in three age categories. Children Riders: up to 13 years of age, Juniors Riders: 14 to 18 years of age, and post that is the Open category: Any age.

However, amidst the pandemic, the club is touted to enforce strict protocols with regards to COVID-19 where participants will have to comply with the rules.

Speaking about the same ARC, President Shyam Mehta, said “It feels great to host the MEL after it had to be cancelled last year. We are making sure all the safety protocols are in place as the safety of players and others involved in the league operations is of utmost importance to us. We look forward to a good show!”

"We have already opened our outdoor riding and training facilities for the athletes to begin practice and make up for the lost time. We hope that tournaments like these lift up the spirit of athletes and prepare them for bigger games," Mehta further stated.

Prakash M. Mehta, Chairman of Equestrian at ARC and in charge of the league shared; “We have worked meticulously towards making this event a fruitful one for all the aspiring athletes who wish to participate. I hope the experience they gather at the MEL and REL helps them in their future national and international endeavours. We look forward to making this event a popular and successful one.

In addition, apart from the usual medals, rosettes and certificates, this year’s MEL also proposes to award championship trophies to the winners.
