State government to set up first international sports university in Maharashtra

The announcement was made by Sports Minister Sunil Kedar and the objective behind establishing an international sports university is to further enhance the performance of the budding athletes and sports enthusiasts in the state

The state government of Maharashtra, in a recent decision, announced an International Sports University to be set up in the state. As per reports, the department of sports is already taking necessary steps towards the development, and the establishment of this university was announced in the budget of 2020-21.

The bill was introduced in the winter session of the legislature and was passed unanimously by both houses, whereby Sports Minister Sunil Kedar informed that the course with admission process will start from the academic year.

In the first year after the establishment, the university will offer three courses - Sports Science, Sports Technology and Sports Coaching and Training - under which, 50 students will be given admission in each course. More courses will be added in the following years after understanding the needs and demands, informed Minister Kedar.

Education and job opportunities will also be made available in Physical Education, Sports Science, Sports Medicine, Sports Technology, Sports Administration, Sports Management, Sports Media and Communication, and Sports Training. Further, the staff will also consider encouraging students to look at training themselves for technical manpower in the field of sports, and necessary requirements will be made available. He also said that research and development in physical education and sports education will be improved.

At present, Pune-based Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex has been developed with international standards with facilities available for various sports. Officials have been updating these and new facilities are being made available for better training, and keeping this in mind, the new university will now be operational at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi area

The up to date basic facilities at the complex makes it suitable for the current needs and meets the standards of the Central Government, and the upcoming university will benefit from the same. Minister Kedar further added that more such universities will be set up in Marathwada and Vidarbha, in the near future and the planning will be done in a phase-wise manner. 

As per reports, the objective behind establishing an international sports university is to further enhance the performance of the budding athletes and sports enthusiasts in the state, thereby provide more training opportunities and encourage the youth to enter the field of sports.
