The men’s hockey team of India have made history as they claim the bronze medal in hockey after 49 years and their first podium in 41 years as they beat Germany 5-4 in the third-fourth place play-off match.

The courtesy of the goals from Simranjeet Singh, Hardik Singh, Rupinderpal Singh and skipper Harmanpreet Singh. The medal was also India's fourth at Tokyo Olympics 2020 following the earlier success of Mirabai Chanu (SIlver), PV Sindhu (Bronze) and Lovlina Borgohain (Bronze).

Earlier, Germany had taken a lead in the match with a goal from the very first attack. However, a reverse hit from Herzbruch in front of goal was saved by India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, however, Timur Oruz converted the rebound to give the team the lead. Germany kept the pressure and once again brought Sreejesh into action as he made a great save from his left hand off a deflection from a German stick. India was finding it difficult to grapple with the brutal German attack with Sreejesh standing like a wall between the goal and the German attack.

However, amidst the continual pressure from Germany, the defence of India stood strong leading the team to win the bronze.

Goals scored by India:

  • First goal - Simranjeet in the 17th minute
  • Second goal - Hardik Singh - 28th minute
  • Third goal - Harmanpreet Singh - 29th minute
  • Fourth goal - Rupinder Pal Singh - 31st minute
  • Fifth goal - Simranjeet in the 34th minute
