The Indian stint in the singles category of L&T Mumbai Open came to an end after India No.1 Ankita Raina lost to Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic during the second round of the tennis tournament on Wednesday. After her three-set win over Rutuja Bhosale in the first round on Wednesday, she seemed to be struggling to find her rhythm during her encounter with Danka and crashed out 2-6, 5-7.

Meanwhile, in the other second round matches, China’s Zheng Saisai managed to book her spot in the quarter-finals after an easy win over Netherlands’ Bibiane Schoofs.  On the other hand, Thailand’s Luksika Khumkhum defeated Barbora Stefkova (CZE) by 6-3, 6-4.

Ankita had qualified for the quarter-finals last year. However, she was unable to get through Danka after being broken throughout the second round of Mumbai Open 2018.

I have to work on my fitness as I had not sufficiently recovered from yesterday’s match, I was a bit slow on in the first set and I got my rhythm back very late in the game. I am glad that WTA Tournaments are coming to India as this has been a great platform for me and it helped me a great deal last year,” stated Ankita in a post-match interview.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Rutuja too made her exit as she and her Japanese partner Hiroko Kuwata went down 3-6, 3-6 against the top-seeded pair of Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic and Russia’s Irina Khromacheva in the doubles quarterfinal of the WTA event.

The tournament will conclude with the finals on Sunday, November 4.
