Maharashtra men’s and women’s team bags bronze medal in National Rugby Championship

The Men’s team defeated West Bengal (17-5) whereas the Women’s team defeated Bihar (10-5) to win bronze in the National Rugby Championship.

While most of us prefer staying at home during the monsoons and play indoor games, there are people that rush out of the door to play football and rugby when it rains. Rugby is a popular game that requires a lot of physical interaction and is a prevalent sport amongst youngsters across the globe.

In India, every year the Senior National Rugby Sevens Championship is held to engage people with the sport.

This year, in the National Rugby Championship held at Chandigarh, the state teams (Maharashtra) of both men and women bagged the bronze medal. The team used to train at the Bombay Gymkhana in Mumbai and has achieved a remarkable feat in the National Championship.

In the tournament, organised by the Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU), Maharashtra defeated West Bengal (17-5) for the third-fourth spot in the men's competition. Akshay Varmale from Kolhapur was the champion of the competition. The women's team defeated Bihar (10-5) in which Satara’s Rutuja Kirdat was ranked among the top three who had the highest scores.
