In a historic recognition of his extraordinary dedication to adventure sports, IPS officer Krishna Prakash, the Chief of Force One in Maharashtra, has been bestowed with the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati Maharashtra Sports Award by the Government of Maharashtra. This remarkable achievement marks the first time that an IPS officer has received such an honor in the realm of adventure sports. A detailed article in the Free Press Journal mentioned that the award ceremony, attended by eminent personalities including Governor Ramesh Bais and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, took place at Pune's Balewadi Stadium, where Prakash was presented with this distinguished accolade.
Krishna Prakash, affectionately known as the 'Ironman' within the police department, has earned this recognition through his unwavering commitment to adventure sports and his profound passion for physical fitness. He actively participates in challenging triathlon events both at the national and international levels, showcasing his dedication to pushing his physical and mental boundaries.
A Pioneering Swim to Remember
One of Prakash's most remarkable achievements is his pioneering swim from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves. Diverging from the traditional course where swimmers rely on favorable tides, Prakash chose to swim against the formidable current. In doing so, he set an astounding record, covering a distance of 16.2 kilometers in just five hours and 26 minutes. This daring expedition was driven by his noble mission to raise awareness about drowning prevention.
An Indelible Mark in the World Book of Records
Krishna Prakash's remarkable accomplishments have etched his name into the World Book of Records. He is recognized as the first Indian Government Servant, Civil Servant, and Uniformed Services Officer, including Armed Forces and Para Military Forces, to attain the prestigious Ironman title. In 2017, he successfully completed the grueling Ironman Triathlon, a globally renowned single-day sporting event known for its extreme challenges. Participants in this formidable test of endurance must conquer a 3.8-kilometer swim, endure a taxing 180.2-kilometer bike ride, and summon the stamina to complete a 42.2-kilometer run, all within a strict 16 to 17-hour timeframe.
A Humble Inspiration
Reflecting on his extraordinary journey, Prakash expressed his deep admiration for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whom he considers his role model for matters of strategy, administration, and guerrilla tactics. Upon learning of his receipt of the award, Prakash described his initial sentiment as one of fulfilled dreams. He underscored the award's significance as the highest honor bestowed in Maharashtra for sporting accomplishments by the Government, a heartening validation of his sporting endeavors.
A Chance Meeting Ignites a Passion
Prakash revealed that his late discovery of this profound passion for sports was ignited by a chance encounter with senior officer K Vijay Kumar. Kumar, known for leading Operation Cocoon and apprehending the infamous Veerappan, inspired Prakash to pursue the Ironman Sporting event. Their meeting occurred during a book release event in Mumbai. Prakash candidly shared that he dedicated two years to rigorous preparation, acknowledging the initial challenges. However, within a mere six months, he boldly entered and completed the Ironman event in France, achieving success on his inaugural attempt.
