Maharashtra paddler Deepit Patil put up a spirited fight but went down in the final of the ongoing UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championship (Central Zone) at the SAG Sports Complex to settle for the silver medal here on Monday.

Deepit, who had been in stunning form throughout the tournament and even got past higher-ranked players in the run upto the finals in the Youth Boys’ Singles category, capitulated to Haryana player and India No. 1 (youth)Jeet Chandra.

He put up a strong fight but could not muster enough to counter Jeet to eventually lose 0-4 (4-11, 6-11, 10-12, 12-14) in the finals to settle for the second place.

Earlier in the tournament, India No. 5 (Youth), Deepit stunned India No. 3 (Youth) Yashansh Malik of Delhi in the quarters 4-3 to qualify for the medal round.

Meanwhile, in the Youth Girls’ Singles, another Maharashtra star, Swastika Ghosh, cornered the bronze medal after making it all the way to the semi-finals. India No. 7 (Youth) too had a good run, cruising into the medal round without facing much of a challenge.

But she stumbled against India No. 6 (Youth) Anusha Kutumbale of Madhya Pradesh and eventual champion in the semi-finals, going down 0-4 to settle for the bronze medal.
