In an announcement made on August 29, several popular names from the field of sports were awarded the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for 2020.
As per the list, Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma, wrestler Vinesh Fogat, table tennis player Manika Batra, paralympic champion Mariappan Thangavelu, hockey player Ritu Rani have been chosen for the award. The event will be held on National Sports Day, where they will be given the title via a virtual ceremony on August 29, 2020.
Besides these, officials have also chosen 27 personalities for the Arjuna Award, 13 coaches for Dronacharya award, 15 players for Dhyan Chand award and eight players for Tensing award. Wrestler Sakshi Malik and Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu who were felicitated with the Khel Ratna award previously were not considered for the Arjuna Award by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
The decision to felicitate 27 sports personalities was taken by a 12-member committee, however names for the Arjuna award was taken by the sports minister.
