The violent attack on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students has resulted in people questioning the safety of the students in the country. Among the people that took a stand against the alleged mob attack, the sports fraternity has not been left untouched.

Along with the battle of words on social media, hundreds of students had gathered at Gateway of India to protest against the violence against the JNU students and teachers. Applauding the same, former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his support for the ongoing protests in Mumbai which were organized in support of JNU students.

However, his support did not go well with Olympic bronze medallist and current Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Yogeshwar Dutt who questioned the cricketer for his comment on the protests.

Manjrekar had tweeted "Well done Mumbai!" on a Twitter post which showed images from the aforementioned protest during Monday night at Gateway of India.

Dutt, in response, quoted a photograph from the same protest which showed a girl holding a 'Free Kashmir' placard and asked Manjrekar,

"This is also the truth of the same procession. @sanjaymanjrekar what do you have to say about such people?".

Amid the controversy over ‘Free Kashmir’ placard, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut defended the poster saying that it indicated freedom from the internet and other restrictions in the valley which was placed ahead of the government’s decision to remove Article 370.
