Mumbaikars will have to wait to ride in the hybrid electric buses which have arrived in Mumbai but are eating dust, all thanks to MMRDA and BEST, who are busy passing the buck.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) procured 10 hybrid electric air-conditioned buses worth INR 1.61 crore which are lying idle at Anik, Kurla and Dharavi bus depots. The only hitch is both MMRDA and BEST are not ready to own up the responsibility.

One one hand, MMRDA’s joint project director (PR) Dilip Kawathkar said that the BEST has not sought permission from Regional Transport Authority (RTO) while on another hand, the BEST officials said that they already received RTO permit to operate buses on streets.

MMRDA had ordered 25 hybrid electric buses, out of which the first batch arrived in September and the second arrived in October, to operate between BKC and nearby stations.
