Recently, a tragic train accident claimed the lives of more than 60 people in a mere five seconds at Amritsar during a Dussehra event. The people were trampled under the train as they were standing on the railway tracks and were unable to move away when the train arrived. While the tragic incident still haunts people, a shocking report has displayed that in the last five years, around 18,000 people have died due to rail accidents in Mumbai.

The report further stated that since the past five years, i.e. from August 2013 to August 2018, 18,423 people died due to rail accidents. Whereas, on the other hand, around 18,864 people were injured due to the accidents. With such an immense fatality rate, the Mumbai railway tracks are pointing towards being a path to death.

The information about the fatal accidents and the ones with people getting injured was revealed after RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed had filed an RTI during September this year and had asked the railway authorities to provide information about the people dead and injured due to rail accidents since 2013.

As per the report, in 2013, 3,506 people had died and 3,318 people were injured. In 2014, 3,423 people had died whereas 3,299 people were left injured. During 2015, 3,304 people died and 3,349 people faced injuries. However, in 2016 and 2017, 3,202 people and 3,014 people died respectively, whereas 3,363 and 3,345 people were injured respectively.

Meanwhile, after eight months of 2018, more than 1,974 people have died due to accidents and 2,173 people were left injured.

Due to which, Ahmed has raised questions about the railway authorities’ consciousness towards public safety. He added that why hadn’t the Railways installed safety walls on both sides of railway tracks as ordered by the Bombay High Court.
