Maharashtra: 37 Deaths On Roads Across State Daily Last Year

On Monday, June 20, the transport department released data that highlighted how deaths caused by road accidents in Mumbai rose by 11 per cent in 2021. On the other hand, Maharashtra saw the foremost number of such deaths in the last five years. 

According to reports, there were 37 deaths on roads across Maharashtra every day last year. Likewise, in Mumbai, deaths rose in 2021 in contrast to 2020 to 387 from 349. The city was also the leading district when it came to maximum road accidents at 2,230. It was, however, Nashik rural that the largest number of deaths at 862 in 2021. 

Based on accounts, of deaths, Mumbai ranked 10th amongst the state's districts in 2021. The prominent cause of accidents was speeding, trailed by drunk driving and lane cutting. 

In the midst of this data, to reduce the cases of speeding and reduce the number of fatalities on the road, the state transport department looks to obtain 76 additional interceptor vehicles that help in nabbing drivers who are violating road safety regulations.

Avinash Dhakne, transport commissioner was quoted in reports declaring that they look to reduce the number of fatalities across the state by 50 per cent in five years. He further uttered that 58 black spots that have had the highest mishaps in the last few years have been identified in Mumbai, where surprise checks will be done.
