Over 40,000 travellers who have either not been vaccinated or have only taken one jab were seized for commuting without a ticket on the Mumbai locals since its commencement from August 15. According to the report by the Times of India, almost Rs 1cr has been collected as fines from them, claimed an official.

Currently, only those who are fully vaccinated and have completed 14 days since are permitted to utilize the local train services.

A week into these relaxations, three lakh travellers who were fully vaccinated made use of the monthly pass to commence travelling cites the report. However, several groups have voiced their discontent regarding the same and are demanding that daily tickets should also be given to these fully vaccinated.

The report further elaborates that at 53 stations those caught, were either travelling for work or were in “despair” to travel. Out of these, some were daily wage earners who weren’t keen on purchasing a monthly pass.

Rail Yatri Parishad, president, Subhash Gupta, according to the account stated, that the railways have been urging people to travel only if required. He believes that daily tickets should be given as not many want to travel by train daily. He cites the case of an emergency for the issuance of daily tickets.

Data from the CR highlights that from August 11 to August 20, 34,391 travellers were caught without tickets. They then collected fines worth Rs 1.42cr from them. Of this number, 14,100 were charged between August 15 and 20. The data further elucidates that since August 15 those caught without tickets were 2,348, while from August 1 to 14 were 1,450.

On the other hand, on the WR, from August 13, 167 were nabbed without a ticket and a Rs 34.12 lakh fine was collected. Similarly, from August 15 to August 21, almost 4,622 were caught and Rs 12.05 lakh was gathered as a penalty.

Since April, Rs 8cr has been collected in fines from ticketless travellers by the railways.
