Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) is set to undergo a significant transformation with the addition of two new platforms by the Central Railway (CR).

The construction began today, on February 12, and will affect over 50 long-distance trains. However, the impact is said to be a small price to pay for the benefits that the new platforms will bring.

The new platforms will allow for the addition of 10–14 extra trains from LTT to northern and southern India during the summer vacation. This move will benefit the 70,000 daily commuters who use the terminus.

The construction work was initially scheduled for completion in December 2023. The construction of the new platforms faced unexpected technical difficulties, leading to a delay in the completion date. But it will commence on the night of February 11–12. The work will continue for seven days, ending on February 18.

While the construction work will affect long-distance train movements, the CR has assured that trains will be rescheduled, short-terminated, and short-originated instead of being cancelled.

According to reports, the new platforms, costing INR 64.10 crore, will facilitate the operation of additional long-distance trains, their quicker dispersal, and improved passenger handling.

At present, 26 trains are moving from the station. This number increases to 37 pairs during peak seasons. The new platforms will help accommodate the expected increase in foot traffic during the summer season.

The new platforms will feature a large island platform, metal poles supporting the roof skeleton, and foot-over bridges. The area where the rails will be installed is already level.
