The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will depute additional 300 marshals at railway stations across the city by the end of the week. These marshals will help enforce the rule of wearing face masks in public places.

This decision comes as Mumbai has seen a spike in the number of reported cases of COVID-19. In addition, the local train services have resumed for the general public recently. The civic body has made the face mask mandatory for all those travelling by local train.

To ensure COVID-19 appropriate behaviour among commuters, BMC will station 100 marshals on Western (WR), 100 marshals on Central (CR) Railway and 100 marshals on Harbour line.

Moreover, two railway police, which includes one female official, will be deployed along with Marshall in order to maintain the law and order during the operation. At present, marshals have been appointed by the Municipal Corporation to take action at the entrances of railway stations, municipal and exit routes from railway pedestrian bridges. However, the number of suburban commuters has increased in the last few days. The proportion of those who do not use masks is also higher, in comparison, hence the number of marshals is insufficient.

There are a total of 144 suburban stations on the Western and Central Railways and it is understood that 288 additional railway police will be deployed. Railway police will also be involved in their operation.

Despite the state government’s warning, the number of people walking without masks has not decreased. As a result, these marshals have been appointed to take stringent action against the passengers who walk without masks even while walking in the pedestrian bridges, platforms, locomotives at the railway station.
