Promoting the green initiative in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) recently announced that it had commenced work on converting rooftops of 350 bus stops across the island city and suburbs.

This move came after the revamped bus stop at Mahalaxmi racecourse received an overwhelming response, which is the first green bus stop inaugurated in the city. A few stops near the racecourse have roofs with plants and flowers, such as Zebrina, Asparagus, Morning Glory and Jasmine, and other flowers which attract butterflies and other pollinating agents. Also, plants atop the ribbon grass will help purify air, officials mentioned.

The transport body further stated that in addition to these 350 stops, it will undertake more 1,000 stops on public-private partnership model.

An official mentioned that they plan to replicate the bus stop near the racecourse at all places.

This is being funded by the environment ministry, for which minister Aaditya Thackeray has taken the initiative to convert 6,000 bus stops with green spaces in eight months.

BEST got a call from PMO asking about the concept, design, costing and maintenance issues for creating green spaces atop bus stops, officials added.

Meanwhile, two months ago, Thackeray had noted that 30 additional green stops are slated to be established across Mumbai. These will include 10 in the Worli area, 10 through the Andheri to Goregaon Link Road and 10 in other suburb areas.

The government has been working on a war footing to make the BEST a more environmentally driven platform.
