Maharashtra BJP leader Pravin Darekar on Sunday, July 11, said that the saffron party will launch protests if the state government doesn't allow people who have taken two doses of COVID-19 vaccine to travel by suburban trains in Mumbai.

He also demanded that employees of the private companies should be allowed to travel by local trains.

Darekar also stated that the residents of Thane, Karjat and Kasara need to travel to their workplaces in Mumbai but they couldn't due to the present restrictions on train travel. Moreover, with a sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices, people have to pay nearly INR 700 to reach Mumbai by private vehicle from Dombivli and Kalyan.

He said that he will take up this issue with Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray and Minister of State for Railway, Raosaheb Danve. Meanwhile, Raosaheb Danve, last week had said that the trains can resume after the government analyses the COVID-19 crisis and sends a proposal regarding the same.

If children are allowed to attend schools in California, then what stops this government from allowing the people to travel in trains? he questioned. If no decision is taken, the BJP will launch an agitation including ''Rail Roko'', Darekar added.

Earlier this year, the local train service in Mumbai were thrown open for limited hours for the general public before the second wave hit the state and the city.

Later, in the wake of the second COVID-19 wave, the local trains in Mumbai were closed for the general public. However, the demands for opening the local train service have been raised by Mumbaikars.

According to sources, a review meeting will be held on July 15 to decide on whether to exempt Mumbaikars from the current restrictions. Besides, it is also expected to discuss allowing vaccinated citizens to travel by local trains.

However, it has come to light that decisions will be made to increase attendance in government, semi-government or private offices and extend the timings of shops. Local train services are unlikely to be exempted as the situation in the surrounding cities has to be considered. The will be decided by the state government, said the civic officials.
