BEST said on Sunday that it will get 25 new electric AC buses later this week, adding to its fleet of 206 electric buses or e-buses. The agency has also established charging points at Backbay, Worli, Malvani, and Shivaji Nagar depots. This would allow e-buses to operate more frequently regardless of the route.

Additionally, BEST will look to acquire 115 additional e-buses over the next two months. “Our mission is to get maximum electric buses on the road and replace the polluting diesel vehicles with CNG or electric,” BEST General Manager, Lokesh Kumar said.

The buses will sport Intelligent Transport System or ITS that offers route/destination details with a board inside the bus as well as vehicle location trackers.

The new e-buses will also have amenities like CCTV cameras, mobile phone charging points, space for specially-abled passengers, wide entry and exit passages, to name a few. It will feature excellent suspension while also being a zero-emission vehicle. Passengers can expect a comfortable experience while travelling on these buses.

During the unveiling of the Electric Vehicle Policy for the state, Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray said that they are keen on adding more e-buses to BEST and MSRTC’s fleets.

“I had launched the initial six electric buses in BEST a few years back and now numbers have gone above 200 and will soon cross 300 buses,” Thackeray said.

Separately, BEST has sent tenders for 100 new double-decker buses with two staircases. These double-deckers should reach Mumbai’s streets in a few months from now.
