On Thursday, January 6, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) conducted a drive to check the Universal Pass of the fully vaccinated passengers in buses as well as at stops in Mumbai and its suburbs. This comes in the backdrop of rising COVID-19 cases in the island city

As a means of public transport, buses are usually flocked by crowds during the peak hours in the mornings and evenings. Based on reports, the checks were undertaken till last evening. However, numbers of those caught without the requisite vaccine certificate were not available.

An account by the Times of India quoted Manoj Varade, BEST spokesperson who elaborated on how travellers were taken aback when the bus conductors and inspectors asked that the Universal Pass be shown. Varade further added that many quickly showed their full vaccination certificates.

According to Varade the checks were undertaken at buses and stops in Colaba, Wadala and Mumbai Central amongst other places. Earlier, the BEST committee chairman, Ashish Chemburkar had announced that random checks will be done for double vaccination certificates.

The BEST also deployed nearly 200 ticket checkers at prominent bus stops and stations during peak hours to see to it that those with e-tickets are validating the same during their journeys. The checkers were also asked to keep an eye on those travelling without tickets.

Recently, BEST launched the Chalo app whose main features include Mobile Tickets and Passes, Live Bus Tracking, Live Arrival Time, Live Crowd Indicator and Tap to Pay Smart Card.
