In a bizarre way to issue salaries, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) provided the salaries of its around 35,000 employees in ₹10 coins, instead of the usual way. The government-owned company issued the delayed salary of November earlier this week.

However, the salary issued in coins was a portion of the worker’s salary - ₹1.5 crore for 35,000 of its employees, while the rest of their pay has been transferred in the banks. BEST requires ₹70 crore to pay salaries for all of its employees.

We had no other option instead of accepting a portion of our salary in the form of ₹10 coins. However, the rest of our pay was transferred into our bank accounts,” said a BEST employee at Worli.

When asked, a senior BEST official informed that this has happened due to heavy accumulation of the coins. As per reports, almost 29 lakh people travelling on the buses every day, and BEST collects ₹10 coins which are almost worth ₹75 lakh every month.

The senior official further informed that they usually dissipate these coins to the private parties including bus pass centres. However, this time due to excess accumulation of coins, BEST had to pay its employee’s partial salary in coins. During their duty, the BEST conductors are given ₹100 in denominations of ₹1, ₹2, or ₹5.
