2019 has been a pleasant year for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) as the transport wing seems to have found its former glory back.

As per reports, the daily ridership of BEST has witnessed an increase of almost a lakh after the introduction of the fleet of wet-leased buses. It is said the daily commuter strength has managed to touch 34 lakh, which is similar to BEST's strength of 2014-15. Now the bus corporation reportedly intends to reportedly increase its strength in areas controlled by auto-rickshaw mafias.

BEST has procured 166 AC mini buses over the last two months on wet-lease that have been ferrying passengers on a short-distance basis. On the other hand, there have been electric and midi-buses on the long-distance route.

Following the slash in fare prices in July, BEST saw a tremendous jump in its daily ridership. Keeping that in mind, the fixed minimum fare for up to five km has been set at ₹5 and the maximum fare at ₹20 for anywhere in Mumbai. Similarly, the fare prices for air-conditioned bus travel cost ₹6 for up to 5 km, while ₹25 would be the maximum for over 15 km journey.

The fare was restructured after a recommendation from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to revive the public transport system in the city.
