Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) was incurring monthly losses of ₹81 crore and owes ₹1,800 crores in loan to financial institutions and private power generators. In a recent meeting between Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar and the newly appointed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi, it was decided that the BEST budget allocation will now be ₹1,200 crore per year i.e. around 100 crore per month.

Mahadeshwar further said that the funds will continue until the proposal by corporators on the merger of BMC and BEST budget is accepted. For the year 2019-20, the BMC budget is ₹30,692 crore out of which ₹1,200 crore is allocated to BEST.
Notably, BEST is all set to start the use of Electronic Ticket Issuing Machines (ETIM) again after discontinuing it for seven months. Moreover, it will also have an indicator which will show the stops names and announce it.
