In an attempt to reduce overcrowding at key railway stations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Central Railway has announced a hike in the prices of platform tickets.

The price hike will be valid in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, as well Thane, Kalyan, Panvel, and Bhiwandi Road stations. Officials said that a single platform ticket that would usually cost ₹10 will now cost ₹50.

Chief Public Relations Officer at Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar said that these new rates came into effect on March 1 and will be valid until June 15 this year.

“The decision was taken to prevent over-crowding at these stations during the summer travel rush,” Sutar added.

This comes as the Mumbai region is experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks, forcing officials to enforce tighter restrictions while also ensuring action against offenders.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray hasn’t outright called for a new lockdown in light of the new cases but has warned that if people don’t follow the safety protocols with the corresponding rules and regulations, the State may have to take stricter mitigation measures.

Recently, the State Cabinet Minister of Relief & Rehabilitation, Vijay Wadettiwar echoed the sentiments of the CM while adding that the state is currently mulling the idea of slashing the number of local trains so as to curb the spread of COVID-19.
