For decades, women have been travelling in the second-class compartment of Central Railway sitting on wooden seats. There was a long demand of cushioned-seats by second class commuters. Likewise, the railway board announced that second-class ladies compartments will get cushioned seats.
Currently, 10 local trains have cushioned-seats in their ladies compartment, additional eight local trains will get the same.
Currently, there are 142 local trains running on CR and on a daily basis, 1,732 locals are put to use. For many years, women commuters travelling in the second class compartment demanded safe and comfortable commuting. The railway authorities had sent the proposal to the Railway Board for an approval.
A few months ago, the CR received permission after which the cushioned-seats were placed in the second class compartments of 10 trains. Ashwani Lohani, Chairman of Railway Board, has also given a green signal for the same.
Senior officials said that cushioned-seats can be placed in a compartment only when local is brought to the Matunga workshop for repair work. He said that it takes 15 days to one month to carry out the repair work and added that remaining eight local trains will get cushioned-seats in next six months.
